Join neighbours and friends as we celebrate our connection to our local rivers through a magical community-created lantern installation. The River of Light installation has been growing each year for the past three years; 2018 is the grand finale!
Upcoming Workshops and Events
> Lantern-making workshops
Learn how to make a lantern out of simple materials like glass jars, tissue paper, chicken wire and bamboo. We’ll also try our hands at making lanterns out of recycled aluminum cans. The finished lanterns will form a large lantern installation along the Alouette River by Davidson’s Pool over two evenings: August 24 and 25.
All workshops are offered free of charge and are drop-in. Come for an hour or join in multiple days. Feel free to bring friends and family members (note: children need to bring an adult along to help with the tricky bits).

Fri Aug 24 & Sat Aug 25 from 7 – 10 pm: Cross’ Cabins Park
Join us for two evenings as we install and light the lanterns among the trees and rocks adjacent to Davidson’s Pool in Cross’ Cabins Park. As the evening light falls into darkness, meander along a river of light through the trees and sparkling on the water.
On Sat Aug 25, in addition to the lanterns, City of Maple Ridge Artist-in-Residence Kat Wahamaa will host an evening of river songs and stories in the park.

Bring your sketchbook and join me outside for some informal art-making. We meet at the studio and go from there. Free and open to all.

> This Place: Making art about Maple Ridge
Join me for a free, fun collage art workshop. We’ll work with photos, maps and writing to create collages that speak to our own experiences of “This Place.” For historical photos and stories, we’ll access the on-line collections of the Maple Ridge Museum and Archives. Be sure to bring a photo, drawing or small object about your favourite place in Maple Ridge to add to your collage.

Join me in the woods and park adjacent to the studio (Cross’ Cabins Park at Davidson’s Pool) for a magical lantern installation celebrating The River. The installations coincide with the Rivers Day and Culture Days weekends.
June 11 – July 2, 2016: Confluence Exhibition
This exhibition at The ACT Art Gallery features the intersecting work of all three Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Artists-in-Residence (Robi Smith, Kat Wahaama, Rebecca Fisher). The opening reception is Saturday, June 11 from 2 – 4 pm. All welcome.

Rivers Day and Culture Days Weekend: Sept 25 – 27, 2015
Take a wander through the park in the evening to experience the magic of lanterns reflecting the theme of The River. The lanterns are installed in the park in front of the Artist-in-Residence studio at 23740 Fern Crescent. Parking available at Cross’ Cabins Park and the Maple Ridge Lapidary Club.

On Saturday afternoon from 1 – 4 pm, drop by the studio to make your own lantern to light your way through the evening installation. You can also drop by the Maple Ridge Lapidary Club to make a wind chime.
On Sunday evening, join all three Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows’ Artists in Residence from 6 – 8 pm at the Port Haney Wharf for a free, family-friendly evening of storytelling, music and performance by the WaterBody Collective. Bring your lantern!
Aug 9 – Sept 20, 2015: Free Drop-in Lantern-Making Workshops
Join me in creating a lantern installation on the theme of The River in the park surrounding the Artist-in-Residence studio at 23740 Fern Crescent, adjacent to Maple Ridge Park. The finished lanterns will be installed in the park during the Rivers Day and Culture Days weekend, September 25 and 26, 2015. No experience necessary; all materials provided. Children welcome with adult supervision.

Age: 8Y – 12Y / Join me for a week of exploring nature as inspiration, a source of art materials, and a setting for creating art work. These exciting camp days will combine art making with hikes, swimming at Davidson’s pool, and outdoor games with Parks & Leisure staff. Art activities include nature printing, journaling, plein air painting, creating forest sculptures, and more!

I’m excited to be part of this year’s Artists in the Park event, held alongside the Haney Farmers’ Market in Memorial Peace Park (Maple Ridge). This “Artists in the Park” market will feature demonstrations and beautiful artwork from all kinds of local artists. July 27 – 31: 10 am – 3 pm: The Art of Lantern Making
Age: 12Y+ / Join me for a week exploring the art of lantern-making. We’ll start with simple forms such as sphere and box lanterns, and then work towards creating more complex and organic forms including animals, fish and birds. Lanterns are made out of simple materials, including wire, bamboo, and tissue paper. No experience required!

Saturday May 23: 10 am – 2 pm: Art at the Farmer’s Market
Visit the Haney Farmer’s Market at Memorial Peace Park and drop by the bandstand to meet a handful of artists from the Art Studio Tour, including myself. We’ll be showcasing our work, from paintings to pottery. Free.
Mapping the Landscape workshop
Do you love maps? Join me for a free workshop where we’ll create maps based on natural, rather than human-made, landmarks. Make a map of your neighbourhood, your favourite walk and the park surrounding the Artist-in-Residence house. Add in stories and symbols that are meaningful to you to create very personal maps. I will share lots of examples and ideas. No drawing or other experience necessary.
